Testing Ground is our residency programme at Exchange Place Studios, intended to provide an intensive period of creative experimentation for an artist based in Sheffield. Our artist-in-residence for May/June 2024 is Grace Clifford, an artist hailing from Birmingham but now based in Sheffield. Her practice looks to the workshops of blue-collar trades for inspiration, reflecting on heritage, class and identity.

Grace is interested in the rituals of making-spaces and in the perceived value of creative labour. Metalwork and welding are important parts of her practice and during the residency she will use repurposed materials and offcuts to test out a new sculptural installation.

Through a series of public open days, visitors are welcome to visit Grace in the studio for a glimpse at her developing work and the chance to ask questions.
