What our current and former Starter Studio holders say:

"Everyone is really generous with their time, not just our mentors but other makers in the community too. They put in a lot of effort to help us develop." Fran Onumah

"My practice has definitely become more consistent, because I didn’t study ceramics to begin with. As well, I’ve increased the scale quite considerably so it’s definitely changed because of the programme. Now that we have the technical support as well, I can actually get the marks [on clay] that I’m after. We’ve explored different ways of making. I don’t know if it’s just because I’m coming towards the end of the programme, but I think I’m finding my way of making, and getting settled into what I had in mind 2 or 3 years ago." Becca Brown

"During the programme I was able to build on the pieces that I had made as part of my university degree collection - I got better at making, thanks to the technical support. And then because I moved to Sheffield I did a collection based on Sheffield - that was a big part of being inspired by the programme and the people around me, and went down really well. Even after the programme ended, I was able to get funding from 'Making Ways' to go on a hand-building course to develop my work further - that was as a result of being in Sheffield. Even after you finish the course, it puts you in a community where you find out about opportunities." Meghan Downs

"It's been amazing to have mentoring not only in your craft, but in book-keeping and the business side of things that you just wouldn’t get anywhere else. To have a creative and a business balance, I think is quite unique to Yorkshire Artspace." Daisy Lee-Overton

The programme runs from September 2019 to September 2021, applications close 29th April 2019.
