STUDIO SPACE AT PERSISTENCE WORKS

Persistence Works has 51 studios of different sizes, specially designed to suit a wide range of visual art practices. Monthly rental charges start at £90 and go up to £250 depending on the size of studio. Studios are either 16sqm, 18sqm, 35sqm or 70sqm. Studios have 24/7 access.

All studio space holders enter into a licence agreement with the Board of Yorkshire ArtSpace.

As a condition of licence we require :

All studios have natural ventilation, a flue, lighting, heating and a sink. Most studios have 3phase electricity and some have a gas supply.

APPLICATION FOR STUDIO SPACE

If you are interested in apllying for a studio, please contact anita@artspace.org.uk for more information and an application form. Please note there is no average waiting time for a studio - it can take anything from a few months to a few years depending on what you're looking for and when a suitable studio becomes vacant.

We will be in touch every 6-8 months or so to ask if your requirements have changed and to update you on progress with finding you a space. It is important you update us with any change of address- if we are unable to contact you we will take your details off our current waiting list.

If you are offered a space you will be required to become a member of the Society.

Allocation Process

The initial allocation process is subject to three criteria:

Selection Panel Meeting
Invitation to the Selection Panel meeting is dependent on being successfully short listed after the Allocation Process. The Selection Panel comprises six people: four current studio space holders (two of whom are artists and two of whom are craftspeople), one Board member and one staff member.

The key selection criterion at the meeting is whether an applicant is currently involved in his/her own creative visual art/craft work for a significant portion of his/her time or engages in the production of art/craft work within a community education context.

Selection is carried out via a short interview and presentation of evidence of recent work through slides or other appropriate documentation.

Sharing and sub-letting your space
Studio holders may sub-let their studio for a period of 6 months up to 1 year while away on a residency, taking a career break etc. All sub-lets are managed through the office and are offered to artists at the top of the waiting list in the first instance. This ensures that studios are allocated as fairly as possible and prevents artists from effectively "jumping" the waiting list.Studio shares are usually organised by the studio space holder. If you are thinking of sharing your studio, please contact the office as soon as possible so that we can issue a studio share form. We need the details of all building users on file for security purposes. As always, all studio shares should also be using the space for the purposes of making visual art. Please note that the licence holder is ultimately responsible for paying all charges. Should the licence holder decide to give up their space, the licence will not be passed to the studio share unless they are at the top of the waiting list.
