Wood fired kiln a success

The brand new wood fired kiln, recently built by Yorkshire Artspace ceramicists Penny Withers and Sarah Villeneau, Green Estate's Andy Shepherd and a number of local, not-so local and Hungarian volunteers, was properly tested on the weekend on 5th May.  The results were revealed on Saturday 12th May as part of the annual Open Up Sheffield/South Yorkshire event.

Some 50-odd pieces consisting of bowls, cups, sculptural pieces, plates, vases and other vessel forms, some made with clay from the site itself even! appeared as if by magic from the chamber of the kiln.  Sarah and Penny proudly presented the work to all who took part in the building, pot-making and test-firing course.  A truly great achievement for a project that has taken almost year to complete.

Manor Stokers wood-firing society are now keen to increase the membership to get this kiln used by as many local and regionally based wood-firing enthusiasts.  Different types of membership are available.  Contact Penny Withers or Sarah Villeneau directly for membership details and costs.
