Introducing Sally Bertram

How did you hear about the Starter Studio Programme for Ceramics?

I studied at Cardiff Metropolitan University and I found out about Yorkshire Artspace during the final year of my degree when I was looking at potential studio spaces for the future.

Can you describe your practice?

I am a ceramic artist and I make sculptural forms that explore line and volume and material. During my time as part of the Starter Studio Programme I am looking forward to getting my hands dirty in the great purpose-built studio space at Manor Oaks and developing work that I feel confident promoting and exhibiting. Equally important for me is to use the next two years to learn the business and professional skills that will enable me to hopefully have a long career as an artist. I plan on taking advantage of all the opportunities for professional development that are available to me now that I am part of such an established arts organisation. I have moved from Cardiff to be part of the programme and having never visited Sheffield before I have actually enjoyed just getting to know my new home. The only downside so far that I’ve found are the steep hills but the fact that the stunning scenery of the peak district is just a short drive out of the city more than makes up for them.

Where can people see your work?

I am taking part in the open studios in November at my Manor Oaks studio where my work will be on display.
