Introducing: Katie Alderson

How did you hear about the Starter Studio Programme?

I was informed by my University; one of my tutors told my about the opportunity, so did a little research and applied straight away.

What made you want to apply?

Following my degree show and New Designers, I was really excited to continue making and looked for a studio with the hope of developing my work into commercial products. When I heard about the opportunity and the amazing facilities available on the programme, it made sense to go for it.

Can you describe your practice?

Ideology Workshop is a multi-discipline design studio, creating bespoke contemporary lighting and mixed media artworks. I graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2015 with a First Class Honors in Decorative Arts; my process-led practice aims to emphasise the beauty of craftsmanship and material harmony within contemporary design. A curiousity stems from Greek mythology and its consequence within the world around me. Carefully researched narratives and modern stereotypes allow me to playfully design artefacts which each tell a significant story.

Where can people see your work?

My work is currently in an exhibition named ‘Rising Stars’ in Devon at the Coombe Gallery. I have two exciting exhibitions lined up for 2015 - Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair in the ‘Graduates’ section and ‘Young Meteors’ at Lustre, Nottingham.

As always, my work is online at www.ideologyworkshop.co.uk and on social media.
